Kimberley in Paradise
By Kimberley Morgan

Once again welcome to another great edition of THE DEOSIL DANCE, another milestone or another nail in my coffin, you decide!!!
It was brought to mind by an old friends who once illustrated The Deosil Dance when it was a paper and ink copy back in the heady luddite days of the 80’s who was lamenting the fact that the Internet has been the nail in the coffin for many an independant Pagan magazine, that flourished in the 70’s 80’s and early 90’s, mine included. It made me think, was the internet and technology such a bad thing to our Pagan heritage and it made me think.

In the 80’s if one needed Incense or oil, you either made your own, or went to a specialist retailer (of which I was one), if you needed Magickal Equipment, you went to specialist shops. When I was first initiated into the Craft in the late 70’s there were no high street shops for Candles, Incenses, books or even magickal equipment. I remember the delight in travelling from outside Liverpool to Northampton with my Old High Priestess or High Priest, to visit ‘Occultique’ run by M John Lovatt, does anybody remember this shop???

You waled in and the smell of Incense hit you, not synthetic modern joss stick incense, but true, Frankinsence, Gum Arabic, Opal and amber,  gentle pagan music, neither folky nor New Agey drifted over you as you were intoxicated by the second hand books, statues, incenses and oils, it was a magickal experience, drinking Earl Grey tea with Marina, my High Priestess and John Lovatt in his shop, relaxing and rejoicing in this our little magickal secret.
It was occultique that encouraged me to start my own mail order business firstly selling Incenses and oils and latterly my own books and I thouroghly enjoyed my times running Deosil Dance and latterly Pentacle Enterprises, (along with Beltane Books, my little shop I opened  thrown into the mix around 1992!!!).

Looking back I wonder, is it better now with Ebay, and a million and one occult suppliers all on the internet? You can order anything, from a statue of the Goddess to a first edition of Witchcraft Today by Gerald Gardner, copies of Anton Laveys Satanic Mass sit shoulder to shoulder with Gwydion Pendderwens ‘Songs for the Old Religion’ and thinking of Phils letter to me, makes me think of a simpler time, when magazines were run by people with something to say, when occult shops were run by people who care not just who can turn over their first ‘Pentagrammed Million’, these were things run by people who were in the know and were known by those in the inner circles of covens and magickal groups. If you knew where to look you knew where to go!!!

Yes, I long for that simpler time, when we belonged not to secret societies, but we were in societies with secrets!

THE DEOSIL DANCE, Which readers of old know by our simple manifest which is; THE DEOSIL DANCE IS AN INDEPENDANT JOURNAL DEDICATED TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF PAGANS AND NEW AGE PHILOSOPHIES THAT EXIST IN THE WORLD TODAY IN ITS MANY MANIFESTATIONS.

That means we are not Part of any Groups or Cliques or Organisations, that set themselves up for Modern Pagans to be some kind of custodians or Guardians of the Truth. We recognise that all Pagans, separated by their many and varied paths are united in one simple truth – they are Pagan, Not Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, or any Neo Pagan/Christian, multi-faith nonsense. We are Pagans, our faith is Pre-Christian, not anti-Christian and as such we celebrate and embrace our faith in its very varied forms, be they Wiccan ( Gardnerian, Alexandrian, Dianic or any other flavour people concoct from the bare bones of Traditional Witchcraft), Heathen, Shamanic, Indigenous Spirit/ancestor worship, all Paths, all Pagan faiths all united by our Paganism
